    Ukraina- country in eastern Europe, and the second largest country in Europe after Russia.     From the 9th century AD northern Ukraine was part of Kievan Rus, the first significant East Slavic state, which succumbed to the Mongol invasions of the 13th century. Ukraine was for centuries thereafter under the rule of a succession of foreign powers, including Poland and the Russian Empire. In 1918 a Bolshevik (Communist) government was established in Ukraine, and in 1922 the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic (SSR) was one of the four founding republics of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR). Ukraines declaration of independence, approved by a popular vote on December 1, 1991, was a major factor in the USSRs collapse later that month.
    Ethnic Ukrainians make up 73 percent of the population of Ukraine. Russians are the largest minority group at 22 percent. Jews (considered both an ethnic and a religious group in Ukraine) and Belarusians each account for about 1 percent of the total. Other numerically significant groups are Bulgarians, Poles, Hungarians, and Romanians. Since the end of World War II in 1945, the proportion of Russians nearly doubled, while the Jewish population declined by about half as a result of emigration. Ethnic clashes are rare, although some tension exists in Crimea between Crimean Tatars and ethnic Russians. The Crimean Tatars, who were forcibly deported to Central Asia in 1944, are being allowed to resettle in Crimea. Of the 250,000 who have returned, about 100,000 still have inadequate housing and 70,000 have not yet received Ukrainian citizenship.
    The official language of the country is Ukrainian, which forms with Russian and Belarusian the eastern branch of the Slavic language subfamily of Indo-European languages. Russian also is widely used, especially in the cities.

  • The area of the capital is nearly 800 sq. km. Its population has started growing recently and at the beginning of 2004 was 2611 thousand people, most of them Ukrainians but also many Russians, Jews, Bilorussians and Poles. The city is spread on both banks in the middle of the river Dnipro. Central districts of the capital are situated on the Kviv plain that before Dnipro is forming its high Right Bank.

    There are many deep ravines in the city that divide it, into separate Highlands that are called mountains Starokyivska, Pecherska, Shcherkavytsya, Khorevytsya and others. The new part of the city, is situated on the lowland left bank of Dnipro. There were no buildings here before 1917 and the territory belonged to the Chernigiv region.

    The historic part of the city consists of the places that formed hundreds of years ago: Podil, Pechersk, Lypky, Zwynets, Obolon, Klov, Gonchary and others.

    The climate in Kyiv is moderately continental, with gentle winters and warm summers. Average January temperatures are -5,8C, average July temperatures +19,5C. The weather conditions in Kyiv are influenced greatly by the Dnipro and its Kyiv and Kaniv water reservoirs. The width of the Dnipro inside the city reaches 400600 m, depth up to 12 m. The city lies on the border of two natural zones the mixed forests (Ukrainian Polissiya) and the mixed forests and plains. Kyiv is surrounded by forests and has 13 parks, including the Central Park of culture and recreation that unites all the parks along the right bank of Dnipro, Hydropark and others.

    Kyiv is a large industrial centre of Ukraine, the leading industries being mechanical engineering and metallurgy. The other highly developed areas include chemical and transport, mechanical engineering, radio-electronics, and production of planes, trawlers, and artificial stones. The strong energy base aids the development of industry. Along with heavy industry such areas as food and publishing are developing. Kyiv is a large centre of car, rail, air and river ways. Due to the concentration of large economic potential and city population Kyiv became a large industrial centre uniting a huge agglomeration of towns around it (Bila Tserkva, Vasylkiv, Fastiv, Boryspil, Irpin and others).

    The Ukrainian capital is one of the largest European scientific and cultural centers. There is a wide web of scientific establishments, higher education establishments, medium specialized schools, lyceums, gymnasiums, places of culture and art.

    Lives of many outstanding people are connected to Kyiv political, state and social figures, writers, composers, painters, scientists, the memory of which is eternalized in monuments, memorials street and square names.

    Among the most famous places of the city is Sofia cathedral (101731), the Golden Gate (101724), Vydubytskyy monastery (XI century), Kyevo-Pecherska Lavra (1051), Kyrylivska church (middle of XII century), Bratskyy monastery (1616), Volodymyrskyy cathedral (186296), Mariyinskyy palace (174552) and many others.

    On the slope of the Volodymyr Hill stands the imposing monument to Prince Volodymyr who is also called the Baptizer of Rus. He converted Kyivan Rus to christianity in 988. The bronze statue was erected in 1853.

    The cathedral was built in 1899-1909 by the architect Horotetskyi. The building is placed on one of the central streets (Chervonoarmiyska st.), and it can be easily recognized by its distinctive Gothic style and a pair of beautiful needle towers. It was restored in 1980 and now is used as both the concert hall for organ music and the church where Roman Catholic services are held

    Ukraine Kyiv Golden Gate

    This fortified wall, defining the limits of the city and serving as a protective barrier from invaders in the centuries past, dates back to 1037, the reign of Prince Yaroslav the Wise. The place was restored to its present condition in 1983, and it now serves as the Golden Gate historical museum. The structure is located in downtown Kyiv, just outside the Zoloti Vorota metro station.l

    St. Sophia Cathedral

    St. Sophia's thirteen gorgeous golden domes nicely blend with the city skyline. The grandiose ensemble was built by Prince Yaroslav the Wise in the XI century in commemoration of the victory over the Pecheneg tribe. The cathedral became a major cultural and political center of Kyivan Rus and a site for receiving ambassadors from many countries.
